The answer, before the detail
- Isolate is not "better" - it is more processed. Removing fat and lactose costs money and removes function along with them.
- WPC 80 at €25.58/kg = €31.98 per kg of protein. WPI 90 at €33.27/kg = €36.97. Concentrate wins on protein cost.
- But WPC 80 Instant at €30.14/kg = €37.68 per kg of protein - more than isolate. If you were going to buy Instant, price the isolate first.
- Choose isolate for: low lactose, low fat, clear beverages, maximum protein per gram. Choose concentrate for everything else.
What actually separates them
Both start from the same liquid: sweet whey off a cheese vat, roughly 0.6% protein. The difference is how far you push the separation.
Concentrate is made by ultrafiltration. A membrane holds back protein while water, lactose and minerals pass through. Diafiltration - adding water back and filtering again - pushes the protein higher. Stop at 35% and you have WPC 35; keep going to 80% and you have WPC 80. Everything that comes along with the protein - some fat, some lactose, some minerals - stays.
Isolate goes further, using microfiltration (cross-flow) or ion exchange to strip fat and lactose almost completely, reaching 90%+ protein. Microfiltration is physical and keeps the native protein structure and the bioactive minor fractions largely intact. Ion exchange is chemical, gets very high protein, and is harder on the alpha-lactalbumin and immunoglobulin fractions.
So "isolate" is not a grade above "concentrate" in the sense of quality. It is the same protein with more of the accompanying matrix taken out. Whether that is an improvement depends entirely on whether you wanted the matrix.

The cost-per-protein trap
Nearly every comparison of concentrate and isolate stops at the price per kilogram. That is the wrong number. What your formulation consumes is protein, not powder.

Three consequences that fall straight out of that table:
- Regular concentrate is the cheapest protein on the list, by a clear margin. If your process disperses the powder mechanically and lactose does not hurt you, this is the commercial answer and the rest of the page is academic.
- Instant concentrate is the most expensive protein on the list. More expensive than isolate. If you are specifying Instant, get a WPI 90 Instant quote in the same model before you sign anything.
- Isolate needs 11% less powder per kg of protein, which also means less bulk in the pack, less freight per unit of protein and more formulation space for other ingredients. That is a real second-order saving that never appears in the per-kg comparison.

Choosing: five questions
1. Does your label make a lactose claim?
WPC 80 at 3-5% lactose cannot support "lactose free" (under 0.1 g/100 g in most EU interpretations) or reliably "low lactose". WPI 90 at under 1% gets you much closer but is not automatically compliant either - the claim depends on the finished product, not the ingredient. If the claim is central to your positioning, isolate or a specifically produced lactose-free grade is the route. This single question decides the majority of real cases.
2. Does the drink have to be clear?
A clear protein water, a juice-style RTD, an acidic beverage at pH 3.2 - these are isolate-only territory. The fat in WPC 80 makes clarity impossible, and near beta-lactoglobulin's isoelectric point (~5.2) a concentrate will aggregate and sediment. Concentrate belongs in opaque, neutral-pH systems.
3. What does the fat do in your product?
Up to 7% fat carries flavour, gives body and rounds mouthfeel. In a milkshake-style RTD, a bar or an ice cream, that is a feature you are getting for free with a cheaper grade. Reformulating a WPC 80 product to WPI 90 usually forces you to add fat back, at which point you have paid a premium to remove something and then paid again to replace it.
4. How high is the protein claim?
Total formulation space is finite. At 80% protein you need 1.25 g of powder per gram of protein; the extra 0.25 g has to come from somewhere. In a 30 g serving targeting 25 g of protein, WPC 80 needs 31.25 g of powder - more than the serving. The arithmetic simply fails and isolate becomes structural, not preferential. Below roughly 70% protein in the finished blend, concentrate is comfortable.
5. Is the protein digested differently?
Not meaningfully. Both are fast-digesting whey with essentially identical amino acid profiles per gram of protein and a PDCAAS of 1.0. Isolate's small edge on absorption speed comes from lower fat, which slows gastric emptying marginally. In practical nutritional terms, for anyone who is not a competitive athlete inside a specific nutrient-timing protocol, the difference is not detectable. The marketing framing of isolate as a "better protein" does not survive contact with the amino acid data.
Three myths worth killing
"Isolate is purer, so it is a higher-quality protein"
Purity here means fewer non-protein components, not better protein. Both have PDCAAS 1.0 - the top of the scale - and near-identical amino acid profiles per gram. Ion-exchange isolate is arguably lower quality in one narrow sense: the process is harder on alpha-lactalbumin and the immunoglobulin fraction than membrane filtration is.
"Concentrate causes bloating"
The mechanism is lactose, and only in people who are lactose intolerant. A 30 g serving of WPC 80 carries roughly 0.9-1.5 g of lactose - well under the 12 g that most lactose-intolerant adults tolerate without symptoms. For consumers with genuine severe intolerance, the concern is real. For the general population it is a marketing story that sells a more expensive grade.
"You need isolate for a high-protein product"
Only if the protein density is high enough that the formulation arithmetic fails. A 20 g protein serving in a 30 g scoop is comfortable on WPC 80. A 25 g protein serving in a 28 g scoop is not possible with any concentrate. Do the arithmetic before you accept the premise.
